What Are the Physical Characteristics of the Earth? The Earth is the only planet known to support life. Although larger than the other inner planets, Earth is much smaller than the gas giants found in the outer solar system. Earth is a terrestrial planet with liquid water covering roughly 70 percent of its solid surface. Earth is the only planet known to support life, and its natural features are the subject of many fields of scientific research. Within the solar system , it is third closest to the sun; it is the largest terrestrial planet and the fifth largest overall. The type of map which shows the natural features of the Earth is a physical map. It is a kind of map which focuses on the geography of a certain area and will most likely show a shaded portion to show a specific area’s landform such as deserts, valleys, plains and mountains. Landforms are the natural features and shapes existent on the face of the earth. Landforms possess many different physical characteristics and are spread out throughout the planet. Together, landforms constitute a specific terrain and their physical arrangement in the landscape forms what is termed as topography. In geography, boundaries separate different regions of Earth. A physical boundary is a naturally occurring barrier between two or more areas. Physical boundaries include oceans, cliffs, or valleys. Surface Features The Earth's surface is composed of rigid plates that move relative to each other. The plates have three main motions, and each one has different results.

Earth’s natural features are in the form of its mountains, rivers, valleys etc. These natural shapes present on the surface of the earth are called land forms. These are mainly formed by the movement of tectonic plates inside the earth or by processes like weathering and erosion on the surface of the earth. There are many different kinds of landforms on earth.

Select from these educational resources to teach middle school students more about physical boundaries. A fault is a crack in the Earth’s surface, and the sides of the fault can move against each other in any direction. They’re rarely vertical, and the side that rests on top is called a hanging wall. The lower half is the footwell. A slip-dip fault is one where the hanging wall slides up or down the footwell, Earth’s surface features are the result of constructive and destructive forces. Constructive forces cause landforms to grow. The eruption of a new volcano creates a new landform. Destructive forces wear landforms down. The land is only about a 100 meters above sea level, and the ice is about 2,700 meters (9,000 feet) thick, making the South Pole even colder than the North Pole. Shockingly, that still does not make the South Pole the coldest place on earth, as the lowest temperature ever recorded was in Vostok, Russia.

Unlike other map data intended for scientific analysis or military mapping, Natural Earth is designed to meet the needs of production cartographers using a variety of software applications. Maximum flexibility is a goal. Natural Earth Vector comes in ESRI shapefile format, the de facto standard for vector geodata.
