Together with natural gas, it makes up petroleum, which is Latin for "rock oil". Petroleum is basically a mix of naturally occurring organic compounds from within the earth that contain primarily hydrogen, carbon and oxygen. When petroleum comes straight out of the ground as a liquid it is called crude oil if dark and viscous, Chemical Composition of Petroleum Petroleum or crude oil is a complex mixture of hydrocarbons and other chemicals. The composition varies widely depending on where and how the petroleum was formed. In fact, chemical analysis can be used to fingerprint the source of petroleum. Crude oil is basically a combination of various hydrocarbon molecules, which comprise of hydrogen, H and carbon, C atoms. Among the types of hydrocarbons present in crude oil, alkanes are predominant. Examples of such alkanes are ethane (C 2 H 6 ), butane (C 4 H 10) and propane (C 3 H 8 ). Synthetic oil has gone through additional chemically engineered processes, so the molecules are more uniform in shape with fewer impurities. One could make the analogy that conventional oil is like rocks (varying molecules with many impurities) and synthetic oil is like marbles (uniform molecules with few impurities). While some manufacturers would prefer the word synthetic to only apply to oils chemically formulated without the use of petroleum as a base oil, that is simply not how the rating system works. Synthetic oil is a lubricant consisting of chemical compounds that are artificially made. Synthetic lubricants can be manufactured using chemically modified petroleum components rather than whole crude oil, but can also be synthesized from other raw materials.The base material, however, is still overwhelmingly crude oil that is distilled and then modified physically and chemically.
