CMS set these thresholds so that the overall proportion of nursing homes is approximately 25 percent fiv e-star, 20 percent for each of two-, three- , and four-star and 15 percent one-star in each rating category in February 2015. The U.S. government, through the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), offers citizens the five-star rating on over 15,000 nursing homes across the country. The system includes data on all of these nursing homes, as well as a rating of between one and five stars for each so that you can get a quick view of the best facilities. A five-star rating is given when a nursing home is found to provide care that is well above average quality. CMS awards stars relative to a facility’s performance against other nursing homes within its own state. In each state, 10 percent of nursing homes receive five stars—the highest rating.
